Couple questions about the Idaho A tags. I'm looking at an archery elk hunt in southeast Idaho, and from what I can gather on the state website, an "A" tag is OTC correct? In their big game booklet, the elk zone I want to hunt lists several game units..with this "A" tag I can hunt all the units in the elk zone..also correct? Will be the first bow hunt for myself and my dad. Thanks for any input!

Yes Ivorytip is correct. South East Idaho has OTC tags for non residents in almost all units. Tags are specific for that unit. Some units include two unit #'s and you are able to hunt both units. A tags and B tags will both be sold over the counter. Depending on the Unit an A tag will be for any elk in archery followed by a cow only hunt in the rifle season while a B tag will be for cow/spike only in archery and then have a open hunt for bulls in the rifle season. Good luck

Thanks guys, I'm looking at the Bannock zone which is units 56,70,73. Have friends that live there and know the area. Would most likely try to hunt around mid to late Sept. to get on rutting bulls..any thoughts? What can I expect for hunter pressure, weather, etc?

I have never personally hunted the Bannock Zone. I will not be a very good source of info for that unit. Let me know if there is anything else that I may be able to help you with.

I haven't hunted that far south either, but Idaho has a pretty good harvest records even on general hunts. You can check it out on the F&G website and compare hunter #s, # of days afield, harvest #s, etc. to other elk zones in the state and see how they stack up. Not like talking to someone who hunts that zone every year, but it's something to go on.

Good luck on your hunt!

Thanks Aught6, I saw those stats on the website. Handy info. We are hunting the Bannock zone due to having friends in that area. This all if I don't draw AZ elk this year! By the way, I also shoot the venerable '06..great cartridge in my opinion. The thing about hunting zones that I've noticed is even large areas can "hunt small" so to speak. Most of the hunters end up in a couple small spots within the zone.
