View Full Version : Eastmans' Get "Hunting Fit" Challenge - April Update

04-04-2011, 09:05 AM
Okay, you hard-workin', weight-losin', endurance-gainin' hunting addicts, time for an update. Put your starting weight, current weight, net loss, and goals accomplished and keep pushing each other toward our goals. Here's mine (and it ain't pretty yet, but'll get better):

Start 232
Current 230
Net loss 2 :(
I started off with a bang, losing 8 lbs. in 11 days. Unfortunately, I had two big roadtrips (not good), two colds (thanks daycare kids!), and fell off the wagon a bit. So, not happy with the first month, but hoping to be 220 by the end of April.

Let's hear your story.

Don't feel bad Ryan, I'm right there with ya. 180 at start, 178 now.....2 big ones! Guess I'm not so much worried about the weight as getting in better shape. I do feel a little better though, wife And I went out shed hunting the other day, put on a few miles and I'm trying to eat better......we'll get there.

Yeah, I hear ya! Started @ 344 lbs lost a quick 8 lbs in 10 days now I'm at 335 for a total of nine pounds in a month. I hit the wall too. Gotta start increasing my exercise time. Want to lose at least 50 pounds for my late August archery hunt in the GIANT Sequoias of the Sierra Nevada Range.

Started out at 170 stopped drinking Mt. Dew and lost 13lbs in 3 weeks, started lifting and running and now am at 167, can't seem to lose the spare tire around my waist, I'm thinking I might have to hit more cardio. Good luck all!

04-05-2011, 05:23 PM
Start: 223
Current: 205
Net loss: 18
I've been working my tail off! I pulled a muscle in my chest so I stopped lifting and have been concentrating solely on cardio and weight loss. Feeling pretty good so I signed up for my first 5K in June, maybe look for one in May also. Hope to be healed up when I reach my target weight so I can start lifting again, but then will probably gain allot of pounds back, just not as fat. When I was in the best shape of my life( many moons ago!) I weighed 220. I really want to end this cycle of getting in shape for hunting, then fattening up for winter!!!

04-05-2011, 05:41 PM
Well...Start weight was 220. Current 211. ( 9 pounds down.) However it was as low as 205, then back up to 215. I need to stop holding on to the counter top I guess! lol....but, but, my wife is making a batch of BBQ ribs so big it is bigger than the pan!! How am I supposed to say no to that? Been walking with the wife and kids. Bought a bag of sand, and will start hauling that around in my frame pack to work out the hips and gluts. I hear the school opened up the track finally, so going to start running again too!

Haven't seen a scale in a while. Been adjusting my diet. I got to hike up a mountain in lower CA this afternoon. OMG!!!!! I've got a long way to go. 2.6 miles one way with 1650' elevation change in 1:45. I had to take 6-7 breaks. It's a good wake up call and beginner climb. I've got two weeks before I'm back home to see my scale. I'm expecting to have lost around 15# to 210. I'm hoping to be cured of my Done Lap Disease by then. You know, when your belly's done lapped over your belt.

04-08-2011, 11:21 AM
An old Jerry Clower joke! LOL.

Well, I lost four more pounds for a total of 13 lbs gone in five weeks. Time to get serious! Good job everybody! Keep it up.

Hey fellas! Wish I saw all this when it started. Anyway, here's my story in a nutshell...

Moved off to college last August, and left behind most of my stomping grounds as far as getting out and hiking/ scouting/ mushroom hunting/ shed hunting for exercise year round. Graduated high school in '07 where I played football and lacrosse to keep me in shape, then after highschool I spent a lot of time in the hills staying pretty fit.

But with the move, I had to find something else to keep me active... so I bought a road bike. Ended up getting pretty serious with it in the past 6 months. I just did my first race on Saturday where I placed #11 out of 460. The race was 96 miles with 6400 ft of climbing. Did it in 5 hours 11 minutes of riding time. I totally surpassed my expectations, finishing an hour faster than my goal time. The crazy thing is, I felt totally fine after I was done... actually I was still full of energy.

I'm already gonna sign up for another 96 miler on May 21st. Even with being in pretty good shape my whole life, never did I think I could compete in endurance activities such as this. It just goes to show what training and self motivation can accomplish. Set your goals high and get after it. IT WORKS! And it also makes you feel so good on a daily basis, as I'm sure many of you know.

Here's my tale of the tape:

Age: 22
Height: 5'10"
Weight before riding: 174 (6 months ago)
Current Weight: 167
RHR before riding: 58 bpm
Current RHR: 49 bpm

Goal: Not to lose too much weight! Though I've lost about 7 lbs since training started, my legs are much bigger so I've definitely lost more fat than 7 lbs which is good. My problem is eating enough calories to fuel my workouts. So I guess my goal is to maintain my weight while losing more fat and lowering my resting heart rate even more. I'm doing an aerobic threshold test next week so maybe I can set some goals based on those results.

Plan: Keep riding, keep eating healthy, and enter more races to keep me going. As soon as I scout up a big blacktail buck for the coming season that will keep me motivated also!

Great work everyone and sorry for the long winded post!

starting weight 165.
current weight 160.
net loss 5.
i have ran 18 miles in the past month slowly working up farther and farther. i have been hitting the hills about once a week. getting ready for half marathon in June.

04-21-2011, 09:24 AM
Starting weight 255
Current weight 247
Total net loss 8 lbs
Broken toe set me back a bit but I had a good workout to start the week that went better than expected and did about 3 miles with a 300 foot elevation gain 250 foot loss and 600 foot gain. Had just over 50 lbs of gear on and did surprisingly well so I figure I'm on the right track. My shoulders are killing me this morning from hauling the weight but my legs feel better than I figured they would.

Here's how I am doing - Starting Weight = 215, this morning = 199.5 so 15.5 lbs down!!!!

I am so stocked! Been working out 6 days a week, every day I switch it up, which seems to work well. One day on the treadmill and free weights, one day on the mt bike, one day brisk walk or run with lunges, situps, pushups then back again.

January 1st 2011 weight: 260 lbs.
Current weight: 235 lbs.
25 lbs. so far....
Goal 225 lbs. by end of summer. Very doeable need to stay focused with an eye on the prize at the end.

Started year with fresh start and new attitude to get in shape for hunting in Southern Idaho this fall. Treadmilling and watching diet, no more rum and cokes or sodas, still have an occasional light beer.

Jogged 2 miles a few weeks ago, farthest I'd ran since 1978. Am going to ride the Idaho City 100 motorcycle race first weekend of June.

Gained 6lbs but I am down 3 inches on my waist and 2 on each thigh. Running more, hunting more, feeling better. I wish I was down weight, but I'll take the results I'm getting. My sweetheart even says I've got abs coming in.

05-03-2011, 09:28 AM

Down from 175 to 163 (have been as low as 161). I hope to be 155 by late August. Running 5 days a week and hitting the gym 3 days. My wife is due with our first child today but is showing no signs. We go to the doctor tomorrow so my workout schedule is preparing to be disrupted but for a great reason. I'm excited about my first DIY mountain hunt and I will just have to figure out how to train with a newborn around.
