View Full Version : Colorado GMU's 26 and 17...Tips??

06-21-2012, 08:46 AM

I'm new to hunting in Colorado and will likely have a tag to hunt a cow elk in GMU's 26 or 17--4th rifle season.

That said, I'm not familiar with these two units (or any in CO for that matter) and I'm hoping some of you more seasoned Colorado hunters can help a guy out.

I hear Little Haystack mountain in GMU 17 offers decent hunting and that The Flat Tops Wilderness area in GMU 26 is decent as well, but I really have no idea.

My buddy and I will be setting up a drop camp and plan to hike in/out to get away from roads and hunters in general; I hear that might be difficult in GMU 17 :-(

If anyone reads this and has any tips to offer regarding the two GMU's that I will likely be hunting elk in this fall, I would really appreciate it!

The best tip I can give you for any unit is to call up the DOW, and get the phone# of the warden for the units you're hunting. They love to help, and have more knowledge than any hunter.

Good luck on your hunt. I'd help you more, but I have no experience it those units.
