Well I applied for a mule deer tag and I did not get drawn. I jsut got my leftover draw letter in the mail and I am debating on what units to apply for. I am leaning toward unit 27,181 for the third rifle season. Does anyone have any advice on either one of these units? Anything would be helpfull. Thanks

Ranchhand, 27 and 181 are decent units and if you can endure the high volume of hunters not just for deer but also for OTC elk you stand a good chance. The genetic in the area is not bad, last year in 181 I was up in 4th season and saw 2 bucks that would score 170+. I think that if you can bear the weekender traffic and get off some roads you will have a good chance at a MATURE buck. Not saying he will be a 200" deer, but a 4 1/2 y/o buck is doable in the unit. For a leftover pre-rut tag its certainly not a bad idea to pick it up if you want to hunt colorado this year. Let me know if i can help you anymore!
Ranchhand, Ditto as to what Aaron told you. It gets hammered pretty hard as it has a lot of access, especially 181, and it is not a bad drive for the Denver hunters. Most hunters will be gone after 3 or 4 days so make sure you out last most other hunters and your success should go way up.

So I'm sitting in 181 right now it's been really tough hunting. This unit depends on snow in the surrounding mountains to push deer into it. Its a winter area so if there is no snow the deer are few and far between. I came in 2013 and harvested a small buck during third rifle and the hunting was great for everyone. This year however,(2014) has been very bad due to the weather. However I have seen does and a few people have got bucks. Also a ATV or utv is a big help out here . Just be up on weather predictions.
