View Full Version : First archery elk

I archery hunted western Montana a couple of weeks ago and if I can get P&Y to open a category for 4x4 elk only I think I may have the world record.
We were hunting about 12 miles in the wilderness and killed this bull about 1 mile from camp I'm guessing. We had bulls bugling hard starting the 2nd day and had a huge bull at 75 yards then had the wind swirl. We were on him a couple of more times, but found out he didn't get that big by being stupid. He played the thermals and bedded on the backside of a steep cliff that didn't allow any kind of stalk. When we called this bull in there was no doubt he was getting an arrow flung at him. This was my first wilderness hunt and my first archery elk hunt so I'm extremely happy with my bull and can't wait to get back out there

So I have a question here... Outstanding bull by the way. What IS a rag horn? According to my hunting partners they consider anything less than a 6x6 to be a rag horn. I do not and this bull would be a prime example. But what does everyone else around the country consider a rag horn bull?

I have alway called 2 1/2 year old bulls raghorns, because their antlers are usually small and funky in some way. A 3 1/2 year old bull is usually a 5 point.
